Japanisch Sommerfest in Berlin 20.June.2012

It was a rainy Saturday, on the 16th of June but we were at Clubhaus der Freien Universität, preparing for the opening of Japanese sommer festival at 16hrs. There was a sake section, bonsai section, tea section, Japanese artist project section and more stalls upstairs. I had my table, actually two tables, one for mini-exhibition and other for work.

The Sommerfest began with the Ambassador´s greetings and a sing of a Germany-Japan mixed choir group. They sang some Doyo (children´s songs) that I´d heard when I was small.

This is my work station. “your name in Japanese”, it´s typical demonstration for these type of event but the visitors were very patient with my terrible German and I could work without stressing myself. This is a paper bug with “ありがとう (arigatou/thank you)” written. Thank you for coming and thank you for buying my works.

Some people I´ve met in this short period of time in Berlin came too, which was nice. And I´ve met new people there, some I may see them at my workshop and some I may see them at the calligraphy class soon. A lady bought a work “絆 (kizuna/bonding)”. She was very happy to take it with her and kept telling me thank you. But I think it was me who wanted to thank her.

Japanese Summer Festival in Berlin 9.June.2012

Next Saturday, the 16th of June is Japanese Summer Festival in Berlin. Usually summer festivals start after the rainy season (梅雨/ tsuyu) in Japan but here in Berlin they celebrate a little bit earlier. It´s a festival for up-coming summer.

There will be a variety of cultural activities to see, Ikebana, Sumi-e, Shogi, Kendo, Iaido, Judo etc… I´ll be participating on the day too. Hope to get to know you. Oh, there will be some Sushi too. FREE ENTRANCE, so feel free to come around with friends.

Making a folding screen-Byoubu 9.May.2012

I was asked to write something for a Byoubu (folding screen). The guy came with materials being cut in the size and he left. He only asked me some words appropriate for sleeping. So I´d chosen three words, “和(wa)” as in harmony and peace, “夢(yume)” as in dream and “静(shizukesa)” as in quietness. Only problem was the material, it was canvas and the calligraphy ink isn´t oil based…

Anyway, I managed this time. But it´s recommendable that you chose other material rather than canvas in case you want one.

Lazo y Arigatou- A year after the earthquake and the tsunami 29.March.2012

The 11th of March was an important day for Japan and Japanese people. It´s been a year since a massive earthquake and a tsunami attacked the north of Japan. There were many events held by not only Japanese people but many who cared about Japan.

In Madrid, some young Japanese artists got together and held a small memorial event, LAZO y ARIGATOU. Lazo means bond in Spanish and arigatou means thank you in Japanese. During this one year, Japan learnt how important the connection between people and to help each other. Many people aroung the world also try to support in many ways. We wanted to thank to all who cared about us and helped us.

Experimental Calligraphy participated in the event and performed. The letter is KIZUNA means bond in Japanese and was the word of the year 2011 in Japan.

You may have notice my special brush… a mop. Apparently a mop is invented by Spain and as I needed a big brush for the event and the theme of the event was “bond”, I thought it´d be interesting to use something Spanish.

Of course I gave the mop a little trick to shape like a calligraphy brush and it worked!

Lazo y Arigatou – Un Año Después del Catástrofe 2.March.2012

El día 11 de marzo 2011 a las 14:46, un terremoto de M8.8 atacó al parte Pacífico de Touhoku. En seguido vino Tsunami, que llevó todas las casas, escuelas, barcos y queridos familias. 6 prefecturas y 62 cuidades y pueblos se desaparecieron o se hundieron debajo de agua, en total 561 km² de area está ahora cubierta con escombros.

En el último año, mucha gente de todos los países del mundo le ha apoyado a Japón. Aquí en España también mucha gente se preocupaba por nosotros y nos apoyaba.

El día 11 de marzo 2012, hace justo 1 año de ese catástrofe. Japón está todavía muy lejos de la recuperación, el problema de la radioactividad sigue. Pero cada día un poquito mejor, por lo menos los japoneses no dejan de tener la esperanza, son fuertes.

Nosotros estamos aquí en Madrid, estamos lejos de nuestro país, pero igual deseamos su recuperación de Japón. También queremos agradecer a todo el mundo por su apoyo durante este tiempo. Así, hemos decidio organizar un pequeño evento “Lazo y Arigato” para el Japón y para todos que nos han ayudado. Lazo es “Kizuna (絆)” en japonés y fue la palabra del año 2011. En este evento yo misma participo como calígrafa, espero veros ahí.

La palabra del Año 2011 12.December.2011

El día 12 de diciembre, la Asociación de Kanji en Japón anunció el kanji del año. Y es “絆”, se pronuncia kizuna y significa vinculo. 

Este año, Japón tuvo un año bastante difícil y sigue siendo difícil. En esa situación mucha gente levantó para ayudar a los demás. No eran el Estado quien llegaron primero a Touhoku para dar las mastas o la comida a la gente sino eran la gente de las otras partes de Japón. Este año fue un año de que agradecíamos los vínculos de los humanos.

Justamente, hace unos meses el padre de una amiga falleció y me pedieron a hacer una obra como un recuerdo del padre. Yo buscaba palabras y frases que sea algo más apropiada. Y llegué una palabra, 絆. Esa palabra kizuna se traduce como vínculo pero sólo utilizamos entre las personas, pues quizás entre tú y tu perrito… Es un vínculo de sangre, una conexión muy profunda que nada puede romperlo. 

Este año, muchos japoneses han pensado y creido en la conexión entre personas.

Taisho – The Hottest Period in Japan 23.July.2011

Hoy, el día 23 de julio es Taisho (大暑), uno de los 24 términos solares que utilizan todavía en Asia y dicen que es el period más calor del año. En Japón es común mandarles a los posteres estacionales a los amigos, las familias, los clientes y los compañeros en este periodo, simplemente para preguntar si están manejando bien el calor. A mi parece hacer eso es muy sensible y me gustaba recibir estas postares durante de las vacaciones.

 

 

Today, the 23rd of July is Taisho (大暑), one of the 24 solar term that is still used in Asian and is said to be the hottest period in a year. In Japan it´s common to send seasonal greeting cards to friends, families, clients and collegues in this period, just to care about how they are coping with the heat. I think it´s quite sensible things to do and I used to like receiving the cards.

La noche de performance – Chocolate Calligraphy 13.July.2011

La noche del sábado en un rincón de Madrid, hubo un visual art/gastronómico donde fui invitada para hacer un performance de caligrafía. Única diferencia es en vez de escribir en papel, escribí en los platos liñeados y, en vez de poner mi pincel en la tinta, mojaba en la olla llena de chocolate…

Escribí un haiku del verano, justo antes del postre, por supuesto el resto de chocolate desapareció al dentro de nuestro estomago.

The night of Saturday, in the corner of Madrid, there was a visual art/gastronomic dinner where I was invited to do a little calligraphy performance. Only the difference is instead of writing on the paper, I had to write on the plates, then instead of using black ink, I held a little pot full of chocolate…

I wrote a haiku in the summer just before the desert and needless to say, the rest of the chocolate disappeared into our tummy, hmm.
